CHARLOTTE, NC (PINPOINT WEATHER) – This week is sure to bring a lot of something we haven’t seen much of in a while: rain!
However, something we have been seeing a lot lately are forest fires. like that of Crowders Mountain Sunday.
We have had quite a dry period since Helene. Charlotte received over 10 inches of rain in the month of September alone.
Looking at rainfall from October and November combined, the Queen City received only 6.5 inches of rain. We may see more rain than that this week.
The Carolinas are experiencing moderately dry conditions, which is a Level 2 (out of 5) drought according to the United States Geological Survey Drought Monitor.
Drier conditions have led to a significant increase in wildfires in North Carolina this fall.
Above is the number of wildfires this fall according to the NC Forest Service. December isn’t even half way through and the Tar Heel State is already approaching 200 fires.
It is not entirely uncommon to see an increasing number of wildfires during the fall months; however, the fire risk should now decrease.
Rain this week will certainly be beneficial in reducing fire danger, as most of the region is likely to receive 2 to 3 inches of rain.
This rain will fall over a three-day period, so widespread flooding is not expected. Expect some isolated high water events in the coming days.
The weather conditions will be dry on Wednesday afternoon.
